Ceiling Fans Installed

Melbourne summers are getting longer and nastier, and running a split system all day isn’t cheap. A ceiling fan costs a few cents per hour to run and can make a room feel four to five degrees cooler by keeping air moving.

Electrx supplies and installs ceiling fans across Melbourne’s western suburbs, from Brooklyn and Footscray through to Tarneit, Point Cook, and Caroline Springs.
As Beacon Lighting Preferred electricians, we can give you great pricing from their range and recommend a model that suits your room size, ceiling height, and budget. Our vans carry the brackets, cabling, switches, and controllers needed for most standard installs, so the job typically gets done in a single visit, no waiting on parts, no return trips.

Every install is completed by A-grade licensed electricians under REC licence 31135 and compliant with current AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards. Whether it’s a bedroom fan swap in Williamstown or a set of outdoor-rated units across an alfresco area in Hoppers Crossing, the work is certified and safe from the moment we finish.

Punctual, polite, professional and well priced. The group did an excellent job working through my list of repairs: ceiling fan; smoke detectors; exhaust fan; switch board; and air con unit. I’d happily use Electrx for any future jobs and recommend to friends.

I hired Electrx to install a couple of outdoor lights (with sensors), a motion sensor for an existing car port light, hard-wired doorbell camera, additional GPOs in the kitchen and converted existing recessed ceiling downlights into pendant lights which turned out great! Bill provided a reasonable quote for these works and he and his colleague did the works with care and attention to detail. They also helped me setup the doorbell camera and adjust the light sensors. Izzy was also great to deal with in the lead up to the day of the works. Everyone was responsive and provided details and answers to my questions. Highly recommend and would return again 💫

The work Bill did adding two extra power points and hiding my HDMI cables was so good, he even helped with cable management which is beyond. I also had a EV charger installed which he got done with no problems at all. Thanks so much!!

Very happy with the service from Electrx. The team was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They took the time to understand my needs and recommended an EV charger that was better suited to my usage rather than simply installing the original option. The installation felt personalised to my home and requirements, and the workmanship was excellent. I really appreciated their honest advice and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

I can't speak highly enough of Bill and the work he did today. Not only did he quickly identify the problem, but he also fixed it efficiently and professionally. He took the time to explain everything, was great to deal with, and offered a very fair price. I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty, and workmanship that he'll be our electrician from now on. A genuinely nice bloke who really knows his trade. I would highly recommend Bill to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled electrician.

What We Install

  • Indoor ceiling fans (bedrooms, living rooms, home offices): Quiet, efficient airflow where you spend the most time. We match the fan size to the room and install with the correct bracket, wiring, and switching for a balanced, vibration-free result.
  • Outdoor and alfresco fans (IP-rated for weather exposure): Pergolas, covered decks, and outdoor entertaining areas need fans rated for moisture and temperature swings. We install IP-rated units built to handle Melbourne conditions without corroding or seizing up after one summer.
  • Fans with integrated LED lights: Get cooling and lighting from a single ceiling point. We wire fan-and-light combos so both functions operate independently and cleanly, with no flickering or dimmer compatibility issues.
  • Fan and light combo switches: Separate wall switches for the fan and light mean you’re not pulling a chain every time you want to adjust something. We install dual-function switch plates that keep the wall neat and the controls simple.
  • Remote control and wall controller setups: Speed settings, timer functions, reverse mode for winter, we set up remote and wall-mounted controllers so you get full control without leaving the couch.
  • Replacement of existing fans: Old fan wobbling, noisy, or just ugly? We remove the old unit, check the bracket and wiring are still up to standard, and install the replacement with everything tested and certified.

Where a Ceiling Fan Replaces a Light Fitting

Most rooms have a light point in the ceiling, but a standard light fitting and a ceiling fan are two very different loads. A light rose holds a fitting that weighs a kilo or two. A ceiling fan weighs anywhere from five to fifteen kilos and generates constant rotational force and vibration. You can’t just hang one off the existing bracket and hope for the best.

We install fan-rated mounting braces that are anchored to the ceiling joists and rated for the weight and movement a fan produces. If the room only has a single light switch, we’ll run a dedicated switch leg so you can control the fan and light independently.

In older homes around Essendon, Kensington, and Ascot Vale, where wiring can be decades old and not always in great shape, we sometimes find cabling that needs upgrading before a fan can safely go in. We’ll flag that during the job and explain what’s needed before any extra work happens. No surprises on the invoice.

Choosing the Right Fan

Size matters more than most people think. A fan that’s too small for the room just pushes air in a tight circle directly underneath it. Too large and it can look out of proportion and create more draught than comfort. As a general guide, 48-inch fans suit bedrooms and smaller rooms, while 52 to 56-inch models are better for open-plan living areas, large lounges, and combined kitchen-dining spaces. Ceiling height matters too, anything below 2.4 metres usually needs a flush-mount or low-profile fan to keep the blades at a safe and comfortable distance.

The other big choice is motor type. AC motor fans are the traditional option, they’re reliable, widely available, and cheaper upfront. DC motor fans cost a bit more but run significantly quieter, use up to 70 percent less energy, and usually come with more speed settings and remote control as standard. For bedrooms where noise matters, DC is worth the extra spend. For outdoor or alfresco areas, make sure the fan carries an appropriate IP rating for moisture exposure, not every fan is built to handle a covered but open-air environment.

Ceiling Fan FAQs

No. In Australia, ceiling fan installation is classified as electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. The wiring connects to your mains, it’s not a plug-in appliance.

A straightforward install where wiring already exists typically runs $150-$300 per fan. If we need to run new wiring or upgrade the mounting point, expect $300-$500. We quote upfront.

Usually yes. We replace the light mounting bracket with a fan-rated one, check the wiring capacity, and install a switch that controls the fan and light separately.

Yes, most fans have a reverse mode that pushes warm air down from the ceiling. Handy in Melbourne where you’ve got the heater running and all the warmth sitting two metres above your head.
