When You Need Electrical Fault Finding

Electrical fault finding is the process of tracing an electrical problem back to its exact source, rather than treating the symptom. A tripping switchboard, a dead circuit, or a power point that’s stopped working are all signs of an underlying fault somewhere in the wiring, and the fix only holds if that source gets found.

Electrx tracks down and repairs electrical faults across Melbourne’s western suburbs, usually in a single visit. We test methodically, isolate the problem, and fix it properly, not just reset the switch and hope it holds.

Punctual, polite, professional and well priced. The group did an excellent job working through my list of repairs: ceiling fan; smoke detectors; exhaust fan; switch board; and air con unit. I’d happily use Electrx for any future jobs and recommend to friends.

I hired Electrx to install a couple of outdoor lights (with sensors), a motion sensor for an existing car port light, hard-wired doorbell camera, additional GPOs in the kitchen and converted existing recessed ceiling downlights into pendant lights which turned out great! Bill provided a reasonable quote for these works and he and his colleague did the works with care and attention to detail. They also helped me setup the doorbell camera and adjust the light sensors. Izzy was also great to deal with in the lead up to the day of the works. Everyone was responsive and provided details and answers to my questions. Highly recommend and would return again 💫

The work Bill did adding two extra power points and hiding my HDMI cables was so good, he even helped with cable management which is beyond. I also had a EV charger installed which he got done with no problems at all. Thanks so much!!

Very happy with the service from Electrx. The team was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They took the time to understand my needs and recommended an EV charger that was better suited to my usage rather than simply installing the original option. The installation felt personalised to my home and requirements, and the workmanship was excellent. I really appreciated their honest advice and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

I can't speak highly enough of Bill and the work he did today. Not only did he quickly identify the problem, but he also fixed it efficiently and professionally. He took the time to explain everything, was great to deal with, and offered a very fair price. I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty, and workmanship that he'll be our electrician from now on. A genuinely nice bloke who really knows his trade. I would highly recommend Bill to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled electrician.

Common faults we find include:

  • A safety switch (RCD) that trips repeatedly or won’t reset
  • Power that cuts out in one room or across the whole house
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • A burning smell, buzzing, or warm and discoloured powerpoints and switches
  • Small shocks or tingles off appliances, switches or taps
  • Circuit breakers that keep flipping

If you can smell burning, see sparks or feel a shock, stop using that circuit and call an electrician straight away.

How we find the fault

Electrical faults hide. A tripping RCD might be a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor circuit, damaged cable, or a failing switchboard component. We work through it systematically:

  • Isolate circuits one at a time to narrow down the source
  • Test with proper diagnostic gear, insulation resistance, RCD testing, thermal checks
  • Inspect the switchboard, wiring, powerpoints and fixed appliances
  • Pinpoint the exact cause, explain it in plain English, and quote the repair before we touch it

Why it’s a job for a licensed electrician

In Victoria, electrical work has to be carried out by a licensed electrician — it’s the law, and for good reason. A fault you can’t see can start a fire or deliver a fatal shock.
Electrx is a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 31135) with Energy Safe Victoria, so every repair is tested and left safe and compliant.

Fast fault finding across Melbourne’s western suburbs

Based in Brooklyn, we cover the western suburbs and beyond — Footscray, Yarraville, Williamstown, Newport, Altona, Werribee, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Sunshine, Caroline Springs and the CBD out to Sunbury. Faults don’t wait for business hours, so we run 24/7 emergency call-outs when it can’t wait.

Fault Finding FAQs

Most faults are diagnosed within the first hour. We charge for the diagnostic time, then give you a fixed price for the repair before we start — so there are no surprises. Simple faults are often found and fixed in the one visit; complex intermittent faults can take longer to trace, and we’ll keep you posted as we go.

A safety switch (RCD) trips when it senses electricity leaking to earth — usually a faulty appliance, moisture in a circuit, or damaged wiring. Sometimes it’s a single appliance, sometimes the wiring itself. We isolate each circuit to find the exact cause rather than guessing, then fix it and test that it holds.

If you can smell burning, see sparks, feel shocks or notice warm powerpoints, stop using that circuit and call us straight away. Other faults are less urgent but still shouldn’t be ignored — an intermittent fault today can become a dead circuit or a hazard tomorrow.

Yes. We run 24/7 emergency call-outs across Melbourne’s western suburbs for faults that can’t wait, total power loss, burning smells or anything unsafe. If it’s not urgent, we’ll book you in at the next convenient time..
