3 Phase Power Upgrades
Three-phase power is no longer just for factories. Across Melbourne’s western suburbs, homeowners are upgrading every week, driven by high-capacity EV chargers, larger solar systems, ducted air conditioning and the reality that ageing single-phase supply simply can’t keep up with modern homes.
Electrx manages the entire process from start to finish, load assessment, Powercor application, switchboard upgrade, consumer mains installation and Certificate of Electrical Safety. One point of contact. No chasing distributors yourself. We’re based in Brooklyn and have been completing three-phase upgrades across the western suburbs since 2018.

Why Choose Us To Install Your Three Phase Power

What Is Three Phase Power?
Most Melbourne homes run on single-phase power — one active wire delivering 230V. Three-phase delivers power across three active wires simultaneously, providing 400V between phases and roughly triple the total capacity.
Think of it as upgrading from a single-lane road to three lanes. The load is shared, voltage is stable, and there’s genuine headroom for everything modern homes demand.
7 Reasons Melbourne Homeowners Upgrade to Three Phase Power
1. You’re Installing a High-Capacity EV Charger
This is now the most common reason we complete three-phase upgrades in Melbourne’s western suburbs. A single-phase EV charger maxes out at around 7.4kW fine for overnight charging if you plug in every night.
But a three-phase charger delivers up to 22kW, cutting charge times by two thirds. For households with two EVs, or anyone who needs a quick top-up before heading out, the difference is significant.
Single-phase (7.4kW): ~8–10 hours for a 60kWh battery
Three-phase (22kW): ~3 hours for the same battery
High-output chargers including the Tesla Wall Connector, Zappi and Ohme Pro all require three-phase supply to operate at full speed. If you’re installing one of these and your home is on single-phase, you’ll need the upgrade first

2. You’re Installing Solar Above 5kW
Single-phase connections typically limit solar installations to around 5kW. For a standard home, that’s often enough, but if you have a large roof, want to maximise self-consumption or plan to add battery storage, you’ll hit that ceiling quickly.
Three-phase allows solar systems up to 15kW or more (subject to distributor approval), better export capabilities, and balanced generation across all three phases. If your solar installer is recommending three-phase, your property needs the supply to match

3. You Have Large Ducted Air Conditioning
Large ducted reverse-cycle systems, the kind being installed throughout Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina and the broader growth corridor, commonly require three-phase to run at rated capacity.
Even systems that don’t strictly require it will run more efficiently on three-phase, with less voltage drop, fewer tripped breakers and longer equipment life. If your lights flicker when the air conditioner kicks in, that’s your single-phase supply telling you it’s struggling.
4. You Run a Home Workshop
Lathes, air compressors, welders, CNC machines and large table saws are built for three-phase. Running industrial equipment on single-phase requires phase converters, which are inefficient and can damage motors over time. Three-phase gives you clean, reliable power designed for the load.
5. You’re Heating a Pool or Running a Large Spa
Electric pool heaters and large spas typically draw 15kW or more. On single-phase, that’s a massive load that competes with everything else on your system. Three-phase allows pool heating to run on a dedicated phase, separate from your household circuits, faster heating, no impact on other appliances, reduced wear on equipment.
6. You Have a High-Demand Kitchen
Modern kitchens push single-phase systems hard. An induction cooktop alone draws 7–8kW at full load. Add a double oven and an instantaneous hot water system and you’re exceeding what a typical single-phase supply can comfortably handle. Three-phase distributes these loads across separate phases so everything works when you need it.
7. You’re Future-Proofing for Battery Storage and Full Electrification
Victoria is moving away from gas. Large battery systems (10kWh+), whole-home electrification and multiple EV charging points all benefit from three-phase supply. Upgrading now means you won’t be paying for another consumer mains upgrade in five years when the next appliance triggers the need

How the Three Phase Upgrade Process Works
A three-phase upgrade in Victoria is a coordinated process involving your electrician, your electricity distributor (Powercor for most of Melbourne’s western suburbs) and an independent electrical inspector. Here’s how it works:
Step 1 — Free Site Assessment
We visit your property, assess your current switchboard, meter box and supply, and confirm whether overhead or underground connection applies. We’ll identify any work required before Powercor can connect, so there are no surprises.
Step 2 — Itemised Quote
We provide a fully itemised quote covering all electrical work. Powercor connection and truck appointment fees are outlined separately so you have a complete picture of the total cost..
Step 3 — Powercor Application
We manage the application to Powercor on your behalf, including all required documentation and the Service Alteration Request. This stage typically takes one to three weeks depending on Powercor’s processing times.
Step 4 — Electrical Work
Once approved, we complete the switchboard upgrade (if required), install new three-phase consumer mains cabling between the point of attachment, your meter and your switchboard, and prepare the property for Powercor’s connection.
Step 5 — Disconnection, Reconnection and Inspection
Two Powercor truck appointments are required — one for disconnection, one for reconnection. We schedule both and coordinate the attendance of an independent certified electrical inspector for the reconnection. Where possible, we aim to complete disconnection, all electrical work and reconnection in a single day so your property isn’t without power overnight.
Step 6 — Certificate of Electrical Safety
Once the upgrade is complete and inspected, we issue your Certificate of Electrical Safety. Job done. Total timeframe from quote to energisation: typically two to four weeks, depending on Powercor’s scheduling in your area.
Does Three Phase Power Increase My Electricity Bills?
No. Upgrading to three-phase does not change your electricity rate. You’re charged based on the kilowatt-hours you consume, not the type of connection. One unit of electricity costs the same on single-phase or three-phase. Your daily supply charge may increase slightly — typically $0.10 to $0.30 per day depending on your retailer, but this is negligible compared to the overall cost of running your home.
In practice, three-phase systems often reduce running costs by improving the efficiency of motors and compressors, reducing voltage drop losses, and enabling faster EV charging during off-peak tariff windows.
