Induction Cooktop Installation And What Is Required

Switching from gas or an old electric cooktop to induction is one of the most common jobs we do across Melbourne’s western suburbs. The cooktop itself is the easy part. What most people are not told is that an induction cooktop almost always needs its own new circuit from the switchboard, an isolation switch within reach, and sometimes a switchboard upgrade to carry it.

Electrx handles all of that, from checking your switchboard to the final test, so the cooktop works properly from the first day.

Punctual, polite, professional and well priced. The group did an excellent job working through my list of repairs: ceiling fan; smoke detectors; exhaust fan; switch board; and air con unit. I’d happily use Electrx for any future jobs and recommend to friends.

I hired Electrx to install a couple of outdoor lights (with sensors), a motion sensor for an existing car port light, hard-wired doorbell camera, additional GPOs in the kitchen and converted existing recessed ceiling downlights into pendant lights which turned out great! Bill provided a reasonable quote for these works and he and his colleague did the works with care and attention to detail. They also helped me setup the doorbell camera and adjust the light sensors. Izzy was also great to deal with in the lead up to the day of the works. Everyone was responsive and provided details and answers to my questions. Highly recommend and would return again 💫

The work Bill did adding two extra power points and hiding my HDMI cables was so good, he even helped with cable management which is beyond. I also had a EV charger installed which he got done with no problems at all. Thanks so much!!

Very happy with the service from Electrx. The team was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They took the time to understand my needs and recommended an EV charger that was better suited to my usage rather than simply installing the original option. The installation felt personalised to my home and requirements, and the workmanship was excellent. I really appreciated their honest advice and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

I can't speak highly enough of Bill and the work he did today. Not only did he quickly identify the problem, but he also fixed it efficiently and professionally. He took the time to explain everything, was great to deal with, and offered a very fair price. I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty, and workmanship that he'll be our electrician from now on. A genuinely nice bloke who really knows his trade. I would highly recommend Bill to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled electrician.

What an induction cooktop needs from your electrics

Induction cooktops draw a lot more power than a gas cooktop and more than most older electric ones. In practice that means:

  • A dedicated circuit: a new cable run from the switchboard to the cooktop, sized for the unit you have bought. The old cooktop circuit is usually not big enough to reuse.
  • Room on the switchboard: a spare pole for the new circuit breaker and a safety switch protecting it. Older boards with ceramic fuses, or boards already full, need upgrading first.
  • An isolation switch: the wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) require a switch that cuts power to the cooktop, positioned within 2 metres of it and easy to reach. We use an existing power point location where we can, otherwise we install a new one.
  • Enough supply to the house: a large or commercial size cooktop, or a home already running an EV charger, electric hot water and a pool pump, can push a single phase supply to its limit. Occasionally the answer is a three phase upgrade, and we tell you that before any work starts.

Every one of these is checked at the quote, not discovered on the day.

Induction cooktop installation requirements in Victoria

IAny electrical installation work in Victoria must be done by a licensed electrician and comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety, which we issue at the end of the job. That certificate is your record that the circuit, the protection and the connection were tested and meet the rules. Electrx is a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 31135), so the paperwork is part of the service.

If you are replacing a gas cooktop, the gas has to be disconnected and capped by a licensed gasfitter.
We coordinate the timing with your gasfitter or your kitchen installer and do the electrical side.

What happens on the day

  1. Power off and old cooktop out: the kitchen circuit is isolated at the switchboard and the existing electric cooktop is disconnected. A gas cooktop is removed once the gasfitter has capped the line.
  2. New circuit run: cable from the switchboard to the cooktop position, through ceilings, walls or under the floor depending on the house. Island benches take a bit more planning and we work that out with you beforehand.
  3. Isolation switch fitted: within 2 metres of the cooktop, using an existing point where possible.
  4. Switchboard work: new circuit breaker and safety switch installed, or the board upgraded if it needs it.
  5. Cooktop connected and tested: the unit is wired in, the cutout checked, the circuit tested under load, and the Certificate of Electrical Safety issued.on on from the main circuit breaker and we test the cook-top to check if it’s working properly.

Most straightforward installs are done in a single visit. If a switchboard upgrade is needed we usually do both on the same day.

Planning a new kitchen or a renovation?

The best time to sort the cooktop circuit is before the benchtop goes in. If you are renovating, tell us where the cooktop is going and we will run the cable and place the isolation switch so nothing has to be pulled apart later. Island benches, in particular, need the cable under the floor before the cabinetry is fixed. We work alongside kitchen installers and builders across the west every week.

Within 2 metres of the cooktop and easy to reach, usually on the wall or the side of a cabinet near the benchtop. We use an existing power point position where we can.
