Punctual, polite, professional and well priced. The group did an excellent job working through my list of repairs: ceiling fan; smoke detectors; exhaust fan; switch board; and air con unit. I’d happily use Electrx for any future jobs and recommend to friends.

I hired Electrx to install a couple of outdoor lights (with sensors), a motion sensor for an existing car port light, hard-wired doorbell camera, additional GPOs in the kitchen and converted existing recessed ceiling downlights into pendant lights which turned out great! Bill provided a reasonable quote for these works and he and his colleague did the works with care and attention to detail. They also helped me setup the doorbell camera and adjust the light sensors. Izzy was also great to deal with in the lead up to the day of the works. Everyone was responsive and provided details and answers to my questions. Highly recommend and would return again 💫

The work Bill did adding two extra power points and hiding my HDMI cables was so good, he even helped with cable management which is beyond. I also had a EV charger installed which he got done with no problems at all. Thanks so much!!

Very happy with the service from Electrx. The team was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They took the time to understand my needs and recommended an EV charger that was better suited to my usage rather than simply installing the original option. The installation felt personalised to my home and requirements, and the workmanship was excellent. I really appreciated their honest advice and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

I can't speak highly enough of Bill and the work he did today. Not only did he quickly identify the problem, but he also fixed it efficiently and professionally. He took the time to explain everything, was great to deal with, and offered a very fair price. I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty, and workmanship that he'll be our electrician from now on. A genuinely nice bloke who really knows his trade. I would highly recommend Bill to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled electrician.

What Is a Private Power Pole?

A private power pole sits on your property and connects the main power supply to your building. They’re common on larger residential blocks, rural and semi-rural properties, farms, and commercial sites where the building is set well back from the street, or where a standard underground connection just isn’t practical.

Because the pole is on private land, the network distributor doesn’t touch it. That’s your responsibility, installation, inspection, maintenance, and replacement if it gets to that point.

Your Legal Responsibilities as a Property Owner

Under Energy Safe Victoria regulations and Australian Standards AS/NZS 3000, property owners are required to keep private poles properly maintained. If a pole fails and causes injury, property damage, or fire, the liability falls on the owner, not the network.

That means staying on top of:

  • Regular inspections by a licensed electrician
  • Vegetation management: keeping trees and growth clear of lines
  • Prompt repairs to any damage, lean, corrosion, or structural weakness

This isn’t just about ticking boxes. A poorly maintained private pole is a genuine fire and safety risk, particularly through summer.

Signs Your Power Pole Needs Attention

Don’t wait until there’s an outage or a safety incident. Get it looked at if you notice:

  • The pole is leaning or showing any instability
  • Visible rot (timber poles) or corrosion (steel poles)
  • Lines sagging more than usual between poles
  • Trees or vegetation growing into or near the lines
  • Any visible damage after a storm

If something doesn’t look right, it’s worth a call.

How Long Do Private Power Poles Last?

Timber poles typically last 20 to 40 years depending on conditions, how well they’ve been maintained, and whether they’ve had any pest or moisture damage. Steel poles can last longer but aren’t immune, surface corrosion can compromise structural integrity over time.

A lot of Melbourne properties, particularly acreage blocks in the outer suburbs and regional fringe, are now hitting that age threshold. If your pole has been there since the property was built and hasn’t been looked at in years, it’s worth scheduling an inspection before it becomes urgent.

Power Pole FAQ’s

The property owner. Once a power pole is on private land, the network distributor, Powercor, United Energy, or whoever services your area, has no obligation to maintain it. That responsibility sits entirely with you. This includes inspections, repairs, vegetation clearance, and full replacement when the time comes. If a private pole fails and causes damage or injury, the liability is yours.

Yes. Replacing a private power pole is electrical infrastructure work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician who will issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion. The work needs to comply with Energy Safe Victoria requirements and Australian Standards AS/NZS 3000. Electrx handles all compliance and certification as part of every pole replacement job.

Yes, and it’s worth considering if you’re already replacing a pole. If you’re running large machinery, a big workshop, EV chargers, or a commercial operation from the property, upgrading to three-phase while the infrastructure work is already underway can save you a separate job down the track. Talk to us when you book and we can assess whether it makes sense for your property.

A straightforward single pole replacement is typically completed in a day. More complex jobs, multiple poles, difficult access, or properties that need power isolated for an extended period, may take longer. We’ll give you a clear timeframe before any work starts so you can plan around it.
