Generator Transfer Switch Installation in Melbourne’s West

A generator transfer switch is the part that safely connects a backup generator to your home or business wiring, so when the power drops, you can run lights, fridges, pumps or essential equipment without running extension leads through the house.

It also stops your generator from back-feeding the grid, which is dangerous for you and for anyone working on the network. In Victoria, connecting one to your switchboard is licensed electrical work, so it needs a Registered Electrical Contractor. We install them across Melbourne’s west.

What a transfer switch actually does

When mains power fails, you can’t just plug a generator into a wall socket to power the house, that back-feeds electricity onto the grid and can injure or kill linesworkers, and it can wreck your generator when the power returns. A transfer switch sits between the grid and your switchboard and does two jobs:

  • Isolates the grid so your generator only ever powers your circuits, never the street.
  • Switches selected circuits over to generator power, so the things that matter — fridge, freezer, lights, internet, a sump or septic pump, medical equipment — keep running.

Manual vs automatic transfer switches

There’s no single “right” switch — it depends on how hands-on you want to be and what you’re protecting:

  • Manual transfer switch — you start the generator and flick the changeover yourself. Lower cost, ideal for occasional outages and portable generators.
  • Automatic transfer switch (ATS) — detects the outage, starts a standby generator and switches over on its own, usually within seconds. Best for businesses, medical needs, or anywhere downtime is costly.

We’ll talk through your situation and recommend the option that fits — not the most expensive one.

Who needs one in Melbourne’s west

  • Homeowners on circuits that suffer storm outages, or anyone running a sump/septic pump, home office or medical equipment.
  • Businesses that lose money or stock when the power goes — hospitality, cold storage, workshops, medical clinics.
  • Rural-edge and acreage properties toward Werribee, Tarneit and the outer west where outages can run longer.

What’s involved in the install

  1. Assessment — we look at your switchboard, the circuits you want backed up, and your generator (or recommend a suitable size).
  2. Switch and wiring — we install the transfer switch and any sub-board, and wire it to the selected circuits.
  3. Test and handover — we test the changeover under load and show you how to run it safely.

All of this is licensed electrical work. Under Energy Safe Victoria’s rules, switchboard and fixed wiring must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor — we’re REC 31135 — and you’ll get a Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion.

What it costs

Price depends on the type of switch (manual vs automatic), how many circuits you’re backing up, your generator size, and your switchboard’s condition. Rather than quote a number that won’t match your job, we’ll look at it and give you a clear written quote. Free quotes across Melbourne’s west.

FAQ

Can I just plug a generator into a power point?

No. That back-feeds the grid and is dangerous and illegal. A transfer switch is the safe, compliant way to connect a generator to your wiring.

Do I need an electrician to install a transfer switch?

Yes. Connecting to your switchboard is licensed electrical work in Victoria and must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor, who issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Manual or automatic — which should I get?

Manual is cheaper and fine for occasional outages with a portable generator. Automatic starts and switches over on its own and suits businesses or anyone who can’t afford downtime. We’ll recommend based on your needs.

What size generator do I need?

It depends on which circuits you want to run at once. We can work out the load and match a generator and switch to it.

Do you service my area?

We cover Brooklyn, Altona, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Point Cook, Williamstown, Yarraville, Footscray and the wider western suburbs. Call to confirm.
