Electricians who know Sunshine North’s housing stock

Sunshine North is mostly post-war brick veneer, solid homes built in the 50s, 60s and 70s that have been lived in hard and added to over the decades. A lot of these homes are now housing two or three generations under one roof, with granny flats going up in backyards and extensions being added to make space for the whole family. The electrical infrastructure in most of them was never designed for any of that.

Electrx are based in nearby Brooklyn and work across Sunshine North regularly. We know the Powercor network in this area, we know what’s inside these walls, and we give you a straight answer about what needs doing rather than overselling the job.

The electrical reality of Sunshine North homes

The switchboards in a lot of these properties are original, ceramic fuse boxes from the 1960s or 70s, wired for a house that ran a few lights, a fridge, and maybe a single electric hotplate.
Tripping fuses, flickering lights under load, and circuits that can’t handle two appliances running at once are the symptoms.

The cause is a switchboard that’s decades past its useful life with no safety switch protection. When it blows a fuse, there’s no automatic disconnection, the fuse just eventually gives out, which is a different thing to an RCD cutting in before something goes wrong.

Outdoor lighting in Sunshine North — security, landscaping, and getting it right first time

A lot of homes in this area have either no outdoor lighting or a single floodlight on a sensor that’s been there since the 90s. For a suburb where multi-generational households are the norm and people are spending real money on their properties, it’s worth doing properly.

Security lighting, sensor-activated floodlights covering the driveway, side gates, and back yard, is the practical starting point. But we do a lot of low-voltage garden and path lighting in Sunshine North too, particularly for homes that have had landscaping done and want the yard to actually look good after dark.

A few things that catch people out: outdoor lighting needs weatherproof fittings rated for the exposure, GPOs need to be RCD-protected, and any wiring that runs underground needs to be done to AS/NZS 3000 — not just a cable buried in conduit by whoever was cheapest on Airtasker. We quote outdoor lighting properly so it doesn’t become a fault-finding job two years down the track.

sunshine north Electrical Work FAQ’s

At minimum: a sub-board in the granny flat with its own circuits, RCD protection, and smoke alarms. Before that can happen, your existing main switchboard needs to be assessed to confirm it has the capacity and the available circuits to feed a second dwelling. If it doesn’t, the switchboard gets upgraded first. If your overall supply capacity is the limitation, a supply upgrade through Powercor is part of the process. We can walk through all of this with you before your builder starts quoting.

That’s a sign the circuits are being overloaded — replacing the fuse just resets the symptom, not the cause. A ceramic fuse box also has no RCD protection, which means there’s no automatic disconnection if there’s a fault on a circuit. A switchboard upgrade replaces the fuse box with a modern board, adds safety switches, and gives you proper circuit capacity for how the house is actually being used. Worth doing before it becomes an emergency.

It depends on what you’re trying to achieve. For security, sensor-activated LED floodlights covering the driveway, side access, and backyard are the practical starting point — positioned to cover the angles that matter rather than just wherever the cable happens to reach. For landscaping and path lighting, low-voltage LED systems give you a lot of flexibility. Either way, fittings need to be weatherproof rated for outdoor exposure and any underground cabling needs to meet AS/NZS 3000. We’ll design it properly rather than just putting lights where they’re easiest to run.

Yes, and it usually makes sense to do both together. When we’re already on site doing switchboard work, running new outdoor circuits adds minimal cost compared to booking a separate job. If you’re also adding circuits for a granny flat or extension, that’s the ideal time to get outdoor lighting scoped in as well.
