Punctual, polite, professional and well priced. The group did an excellent job working through my list of repairs: ceiling fan; smoke detectors; exhaust fan; switch board; and air con unit. I’d happily use Electrx for any future jobs and recommend to friends.

I hired Electrx to install a couple of outdoor lights (with sensors), a motion sensor for an existing car port light, hard-wired doorbell camera, additional GPOs in the kitchen and converted existing recessed ceiling downlights into pendant lights which turned out great! Bill provided a reasonable quote for these works and he and his colleague did the works with care and attention to detail. They also helped me setup the doorbell camera and adjust the light sensors. Izzy was also great to deal with in the lead up to the day of the works. Everyone was responsive and provided details and answers to my questions. Highly recommend and would return again 💫

The work Bill did adding two extra power points and hiding my HDMI cables was so good, he even helped with cable management which is beyond. I also had a EV charger installed which he got done with no problems at all. Thanks so much!!

Very happy with the service from Electrx. The team was professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They took the time to understand my needs and recommended an EV charger that was better suited to my usage rather than simply installing the original option. The installation felt personalised to my home and requirements, and the workmanship was excellent. I really appreciated their honest advice and attention to detail. Highly recommended!

I can't speak highly enough of Bill and the work he did today. Not only did he quickly identify the problem, but he also fixed it efficiently and professionally. He took the time to explain everything, was great to deal with, and offered a very fair price. I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty, and workmanship that he'll be our electrician from now on. A genuinely nice bloke who really knows his trade. I would highly recommend Bill to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled electrician.

Two very different electrical challenges, one suburb

Kensington is Victorian terraces on one side, tight, heritage-listed, original wiring run through cavities and under floors and Kensington Banks medium-density apartments on the other, built in the 90s and 2000s and now coping with loads they were never designed for.
Add the Bellair Street and Macaulay Road commercial strip turning over tenants regularly, and you’ve got three distinct markets in a single postcode.

Electrx work across all of them. We’re based in Brooklyn, we’re familiar with the constraints of heritage electrical work, and we do the apartment and commercial jobs that require more planning than a standard residential call-out.

Services we cover in Kensington:

  • Full and partial terrace rewires
  • Heritage-sensitive installations, minimal surface mounting, considered conduit routing
  • Switchboard upgrades and RCD installation
  • EV charger installation in apartments and terrace homes (Ohme Accredited Installer)
  • Commercial switchboard upgrades and shopfits
  • Downlights, lighting upgrades, and ceiling fans
  • Smoke alarms and compliance
  • Fault finding and emergency electrical, 24 hours

What the wiring looks like in a Kensington terrace

Victorian terraces were built before electricity existed. The wiring was added later, run through wall cavities, under timber floors, and sometimes across ceiling voids in ways that made sense at the time but create real problems now. When one circuit fails in a terrace, the effect is rarely isolated. Half the upstairs goes dark, or a single fault takes out multiple rooms.

The other issue is what you find when you open things up. Cotton-covered wiring and ceramic fuses. It’s out dated and even dangerous

Heritage overlay adds another layer. External surface mounting of conduit and cable isn’t always acceptable on a heritage property, and the routing decisions that are fine on a standard home need more thought here. We work within those constraints rather than taking the easiest cable run and leaving it for the owner to deal with later.

Rewiring a Kensington terrace, why partial rewires so often fail

A partial rewire sounds like a reasonable middle ground, but in a terrace the wiring runs through the same limited access points throughout the house, and once you’re in the cavity pulling cable, the cost difference between replacing the problem circuits and doing the whole job is often smaller than expected. What gets left behind is the real risk: ageing cable in cavities you can’t easily inspect, waiting to fail two years down the track.

Access drives the decision more than anything else. Suspended timber floors mean underfloor access, which makes rewiring far less disruptive. Concrete slabs are a different job entirely. We’ll assess the access before recommending a scope, not after you’ve committed to one.

Kensington Banks apartments and EV chargers

The Kensington Banks development brought medium-density apartment living to the suburb in the late 90s and 2000s. Those buildings are now 20-plus years old, and the switchboards were sized for what a two-bedroom apartment was expected to run, not for EV chargers, induction cooktops and home offices running simultaneously.

EV charger installation in an apartment building requires a load assessment of the building’s main switchboard, a dedicated circuit with RCD protection, sub-metering so usage is billed correctly, and owners corporation approval if any common property is involved.
It’s the same process we work through in Docklands, and like Docklands, it’s work most electricians decline. We don’t.

Bellair Street and Macaulay Road shopfits

Converting a Victorian building on Bellair Street or Macaulay Road into a cafe, retail space, or office isn’t a standard fitout. The heritage fabric of the building limits what you can do structurally, the existing electrical is usually inadequate for commercial loads, and the switchboard work needs to be done properly given the building use.
Three-phase is often the starting point for a hospitality tenancy, and getting it there in a heritage building takes more planning than a standard commercial job.

If you’re taking on a Kensington commercial tenancy, talk to us before your fitout contractor starts quoting. The electrical scope affects the whole timeline.

Kensington Electrical Work FAQ’s

It varies too much to give a number without seeing the property, access is the biggest variable. A terrace with suspended timber floors and good underfloor access is a very different job to one with a concrete slab and limited cavity access. The size of the house, the condition of the existing wiring, and whether the switchboard needs upgrading at the same time all affect the final figure. We’ll inspect and quote properly rather than give you a ballpark that bears no resemblance to the actual job.

Yes, but it requires more planning than a standard installation. The goal is to route cable through existing cavities and underfloor spaces wherever possible, avoid surface mounting on heritage facades, and use fittings that suit the building. We’re familiar with heritage overlay requirements in inner Melbourne and work within them. If council approval is needed for any external work, we’ll flag it before we start.

Yes, though it involves more steps than a standard home installation. The building’s main switchboard needs to have available capacity, a dedicated circuit needs to be run to your carpark space, the charger needs to be sub-metered, and owners corporation approval is required if any common property is involved. We manage this process regularly and can help you understand what your OC will need before you approach them.schedule a time that suits you-punctuality is part of our guarantee.

For a typical two to three bedroom Kensington terrace, three to five days is a reasonable estimate, but access determines the timeline more than anything else. Good underfloor access speeds the job significantly. Ornate plasterwork ceilings that need to be preserved slow it down. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe after inspecting the property, including whether any plastering or patching is likely to be needed after the work is done.
