Switchboard Electrician

Electricians for Taylors Lakes homes: workshops, EV chargers and switchboard upgrades

Taylors Lakes is a different kind of suburb to work in. Bigger homes on bigger blocks, double garages, pools, alfresco areas, and families who’ve invested seriously in their properties. The electrical demands that come with all of that have grown well beyond what most of these homes were originally wired for — and the additions keep coming.

Electrx are based in Brooklyn and work across Taylors Lakes and the surrounding estates regularly.
We’re on the Powercor network, we do the work that other electricians find complicated, and we tell you upfront what a job actually involves rather than discovering it once we’ve started.

What we find in most Taylors Lakes homes

The homes here were built from the late 90s through to the mid-2000s on what was then a clean slate. Builder-spec switchboards were fine for the load those homes were expected to run. That was before reverse-cycle ducted systems became standard, before induction cooktops, before anyone had an EV in the garage.
A lot of those switchboards are now 15 to 20 years old and running at or near capacity.
Add an EV charger, which needs its own dedicated circuit — on top of ducted heating and cooling, induction cook tops and a switchboard upgrade is required.

Double garages, outdoor living, and homes that have grown beyond their original wiring

A double garage built in 2002 has a single GPO and a fluorescent light. That was fine when it was storing two cars. It’s not fine when it’s been converted into a home gym, a home office, a studio, or an extra room, which is exactly what’s happening across Taylors Lakes as families make the most of the space they have.

Garage conversions need proper circuits for the use the room is actually getting, dedicated power, adequate lighting, data points if it’s a workspace, and heating or cooling if it’s being used year-round.
If an EV charger is going in the same space, that’s its own dedicated circuit and needs to be factored in from the start.

Outside, the alfresco and entertaining areas in Taylors Lakes homes are often still running extension cords through sliding doors. Weatherproof GPOs on a dedicated RCD-protected circuit, outdoor lighting on its own switch, and cable run in appropriate conduit is the right way to do it — and it’s not a big job when done properly.

taylors lakes Electrical Work FAQ’s

It depends on how the space is being used, but the starting point is always the same: a single GPO and a fluorescent light isn’t enough. A home gym needs dedicated circuits for any high-draw equipment, proper lighting, and if you’re adding a split system for heating and cooling, that’s its own circuit. A home office needs adequate power points, data cabling, and lighting that’s actually suited to a workspace rather than a garage. We’ll scope it based on what you’re putting in the room rather than giving you a generic answer — get in touch before the conversion starts so the electrical is designed around the fit-out, not added as an afterthought.

Often not anymore. Builder-spec switchboards from the late 90s and 2000s were sized for a lighter load than what these homes now run. Many have partial RCD coverage — power circuits protected, lighting circuits not. If you’ve added ducted AC, induction, a home office, or EV charging since the house was built, it’s worth having the board assessed rather than assuming it’s keeping up.

More straightforward than most people expect. We run dedicated circuits to the garage — separate GPOs for the workshop side, a lighting circuit on its own switch, and if you want an EV charger, that gets its own circuit as well. Everything is RCD protected and sized for what you’re actually running, not just the minimum. It’s a half to full day job depending on how far the garage sits from the main board.

It depends on what your switchboard currently has available. An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and if the board is already heavily loaded with ducted AC, induction, and workshop power, there may not be much headroom. We do a load assessment before we quote — there’s no point installing a charger on a board that can’t support it safely, and in most cases the switchboard upgrade and EV install happen together.

Generally not. LED downlight upgrades are straightforward, and if you’re replacing existing fittings the circuits are already there. Ceiling fans need a fan-rated ceiling box and, if you want a separate light/fan switch, some wiring changes — but it’s not major. If you’re doing multiple rooms it makes sense to do them together. We can quote the whole house at once so you’re not paying call-out fees repeatedly.
