Your Electrician in Moonee Ponds

Why Choose Us As Your moonee ponds Electricians

Local electricians who know what’s behind Moonee Ponds walls

Moonee Ponds is one of Melbourne’s more interesting suburbs to work in electrically. You’ve got 100-year-old Edwardian and Federation homes, many mid-renovation, sitting alongside the Puckle Street commercial strip, which has been turning over tenants and fitouts for decades. The electrical challenges in both are real, and they’re different.

Electrx work across Moonee Ponds regularly. We’re based in Brooklyn, we’re across the Powercor network, and we’re familiar with what you find when you open up walls in a house built in 1910 versus one that was “modernised” in 1985.

Services we cover in Moonee Ponds:

  • Switchboard upgrades and safety switch installation
  • Full and partial home rewires

What we find in most Moonee Ponds homes

Older homes in Moonee Ponds present a predictable set of problems, predictable because we’ve seen them dozens of times.
Cloth-covered and rubber-insulated wiring is still live in a lot of these houses. It was compliant when it was installed, and it’s often been patched and extended over the years without being replaced.
The risk isn’t always obvious until you’re adding downlights in a ceiling or chasing a fault, and then you find out just how brittle the insulation has become.
Ceramic fuse boxes are another one. If your Moonee Ponds home still has a fuse box with porcelain fuses that you swap out when something trips, it has no safety switch protection. That means no automatic disconnection if there’s a fault, the fuse blows eventually, but not before something has potentially gone wrong.
A modern switchboard with RCD protection is the fix.

The other issue we see constantly: switchboards that were sized for a house with a TV and a few lights.
Want to add a ducted reverse-cycle system, an induction cooktop, or an EV chargers? Your switchboard will need some sort of upgrade to cope with modern appliances.
A switchboard upgrade isn’t just about safety, it’s about making the house actually work the way you want to use it.

Renovating a Moonee Ponds Edwardian? The sequencing matters.

One of the most expensive mistakes in a heritage home renovation is getting the electrical sequencing wrong. The rewire, or at minimum the new circuits, needs to happen before the plasterer. Once ceilings are restored and walls are freshly lined, going back in is destructive and expensive.

This is especially relevant in Moonee Ponds where so many homes are mid-reno. We regularly get called in after someone’s realised the heritage plastered ceiling they’ve just had restored needs to come down again because the downlight circuit was never run.

If you’re planning a renovation, get us in before the plasterer quotes. We can walk through what needs to happen, in what order, and give you a realistic picture of the electrical scope before you commit to a builder’s timeline.

Puckle Street and commercial fitouts

The Puckle Street strip has been changing for years, independent retail, hospitality, health and wellness, and a lot of those buildings were never designed for the electrical loads a modern fitout needs.
Three-phase power is often the answer, and in heritage commercial buildings, getting it there requires more planning than a standard job.

If you’re taking on a Puckle Street tenancy or fitting out anywhere in Moonee Ponds, call us before you commit to a fitout timeline. The electrical scope can affect everything else, and it’s better to know early.

moonee ponds Electrical Work FAQ’s

It depends on what was done and how thoroughly. A full rewire in the 80s using TPS cable is likely still serviceable, but you’d want it inspected — particularly if the switchboard hasn’t been updated since. If the “rewire” was partial, it’s worth understanding exactly what was and wasn’t replaced. We can do an inspection and give you a plain-English assessment.

Usually one of two things: either the circuit is undersized for the combined load, or there’s a loose connection somewhere in the circuit. Flickering under load can also indicate a neutral issue. It’s not something to ignore — book a fault inspection and we’ll trace it properly.

Sometimes, but not always. Induction draws significantly more current than a gas cooktop (which draws none). If your switchboard has spare capacity and the kitchen circuit can handle it, you may be fine. If your switchboard is already at capacity or still ceramic, the upgrade is part of the job. We’ll assess before we quote.

For a typical 3–4 bedroom Edwardian, a full rewire is generally a 3–5 day job, but that’s assuming access is reasonable. If ceilings are ornate plasterwork and walls are solid brick, it takes longer and requires more care. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe after seeing the property — not a number designed to win the job.

In most cases in Moonee Ponds, yes. Older switchboards often don’t have a spare circuit of the right capacity, and EV chargers need a dedicated circuit with RCD protection. If you’re already thinking about an EV, it’s a good time to look at the switchboard holistically — especially if you’re also planning induction or solar.
